The Netherlands has proven that it is a good quality baseball team. It defeated Cuba on Saturday night 2 to1 – for the second time in a row on that week – and captured the gold medal at the 39th edition of the Baseball World Cup, which was staged by the International Baseball Federation in Panama.
A silver medal is nothing to be ashamed for Cuba, but in 2011 the Dutch proved that they were the better baseball team. Cuba will have to say what “them bums” from Brooklyn used to say: “wait till next year.” They should console themselves that they were not brought down by the once mighty Yankees. American baseball is now a days a sorry spectacle of greed.
The Netherlands is today the new name in baseball. But Cuba will come back. Don't count her out yet.
There is no doubt that a very high number of “defections” by Cuban baseball players, who constantly chase the almighty dollar, has hurt what once was a baseball powerhouse in the Caribbean.
The capitalist in the United States love to commit theft, and they have "stolen" a lot of good Cuban baseball players.

Cuba defeats Canada 8-2 and Panama 7-2 and advances to the gold medal game tonight
Canada's and Panama's gold medal hopes were dashed on Friday when Team Cuba beat the Canadians 8-2 and followed that with a victory over Panama by the score of 7-2.
Cuba and the Netherlands ended the finals with the best records, six wins and one loss, and will play for the gold medal game tonight at 19:30.
Here is how Team Cuba batters performed vs Canada:

The Netherlands defeats Cuba 4-1 in a short game
In a game that was only seven innings because of a quadruple rain delay yesterday that postponed the playing of four scheduled World Cup matches, the squad from The Netherlands, always a very dangerous and quality team, defeated Cuba yesterday by 4-1.
The starting pitcher Orlando Yntema only allowed one earned run. Cuba could only come up with five hits, two apiece by Despaigne and Gourriel and one by Cepeda. The Dutch connected six hits, two of them being home runs. Cuba's starting pitcher, Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez, allowed four earned runs. Team Cuba committed one error.
Because it was an officially shortened game, there was no winning or losing pitcher.
Cuba has to defeat Canada today in order to advance to the Gold Crown game on Saturday, at 7:30 p.m.
It is a MUST WIN game for Cuba today.

Rainout at the Baseball World Cup. Calendar Readjusted.
Four games were canceled yesterday due to rain at the 39th edition of the Baseball World Cup which is currently being played in Panama.
The restructuring that this weather event dictates is as follow: the remaining games will be seven innings each. All of the remaining teams will have to play a doubleheader on Thursday and Friday.
The game for the Gold Medal will be on Saturday with the two teams that have the best records. Cuba remains in first place with four victories, followed by The Netherlands with three victories and one defeat.

Tras la inoportuna suspensión por lluvia de la jornada del miércoles, la Federación Internacional de Béisbol anunció una reestructuración del calendario en la Copa Mundial, con sede en Panamá.
Pero, más allá de reprogramar los partidos, se ha tomado la decisión de jugarlos a siete entradas, porque todos los equipos tendrán que efectuar un doble juego entre jueves y viernes. ¡Ay, mamá! ¿Qué les parece?
La excepción será el partido sellado entre Holanda y Australia, el cual se completará desde el momento en que fue detenido, con empate a una carrera por bando a la altura del séptimo inning.
Veremos si la lluvia no sigue lacerando esta Copa Mundial, que parecía una cosa y terminó siendo otra, muy por debajo de la efectuada hace dos años en Europa.
Cuba marcha al frente en la tabla de posiciones con cuatro éxitos sin fracasos. Detrás se ubican Holanda (3-1), Panamá (2-2), Canadá (2-2), Australia (2-2), Estados Unidos (1-3), Venezuela (1-3) y Corea del Sur (1-3). La final será el sábado entre los dos equipos de mejor ubicación.

Cuba defeats USA 8-7 in the Quarterfinals of the 2011 Baseball World Cup
It was a very close game, but in the end Cuba prevailed 8-7 over the American squad and it has now eight straight victories and no losses.
Here is how the Cuban batters performed: Castillo (5-3), Bell (4-1), Cepeda (4-3) Despaigne (4-2) Gourriel (4-3) Abreu (4-3) Pestano (4-1), Arrebarrena (4-1). Total numbers of hits for Cuba: 17. Despaigne connected a home run, and Abrue and Castillo had doubles.
The winning pitcher for Cuba was Norberto Gonzalez, his first victory in the tournament. Yadier Pedroso pitched the last three innings and was credited with the save.
Cuba will play today at 8:30 p.m. against Panama at Omar Torrijos Stadium.

Cuba defeats Germany 8-2 and Nicaragua 6-0
The steamroller of Team Cuba continues! On Saturday it defeated Germamy 8-2 based on the excellent relief pitching of Dalier Hinojosa, who captured his first victory of the 39th Baseball World Cup being played in Panama.
Jose Dariel Abreu had a solo homer, and Yullieski Gourriel had an excellent day with three RBI's. The Germans put up a little resistance in the first inning, and scored two runs.

Team Cuba on cruise control, defeats Italy 5-1
Cuba had another easy game yesterday. Castillo connected a solo home run and a triple, and Abreu had a home run too. Cepeda also contributed a triple. Team Cuba defeated Italy 5-1. It remains undefeated with five straight wins.
Freddy Asiel Alvarez was the winning pitcher for the criollos. He pitched seven innings and struck out six without giving any free bases. Alberto Soto La O pitched in relief for two perfect innings. No one reached first base.
Cuba plays today against Germany and tomorrow against Nicaragua to close out the first round of the 2011 World Cup.

SANTIAGO DE VERAGUAS.— Yulieski Gourriel, con su cuadrangular número 20 en Copas del Mundo, y Alexei Bell con oportuno doblete en el octavo, resultaron los hombres claves en el cuarto éxito consecutivo de Cuba, esta vez ante un equipo sudcoreano que ofreció resistencia.
Confieso que nunca entenderé la filosofía de los asiáticos en el béisbol, sobre todo cuando se cambia a un abridor que ha colgado tres ceros sin mayores dificultades por un zurdo que viene a lanzarle a un bateador ambidiestro y dos derechos. Jit de Despaigne y el cuadrangular de Yulieski fueron el castigo al mentor Bo Sung Chun, equivocado como muchos de sus colegas.
Hubo un cambio en la alineación, pues Héctor Olivera tiene una distensión en las miofibrillas de la parte posterior de su pierna derecha que le impide jugar, aunque la lesión no es de gravedad. Esto obligó a utilizar una fórmula ya conocida, con Michel Enríquez en la antesala y Yulieski en segunda. Y fueron ellos dos quienes cortaron la primera amenaza rival, como si hubieran jugado siempre así.
Otro Yulieski, el zurdo artemiseño de apellido González, demostró que Urquiola tenía razón al colocarlo, pues los sudcoreanos presentaron seis bateadores de esa mano. Los dominó por completo apoyado en su curva tirada hacia la esquina de afuera, lanzamiento que sus adversarios fueron incapaces de conectar. Fueron 10 ponches hasta que llegó el cansancio y los dos formidables relevos de Vicyohandri Odelín y Yadier Pedroso, este último sacando por la vía del ponche a tres de los cinco hombres a los que se enfrentó.
El batazo de Bell fue después de recibir Yulieski la base intencional, tras la brecha abierta por el inicialista Ji Young Lee. Me pregunto si es aconsejable embasar corredores con el marcador en contra y, para colmo, preferir a un hombre como Bell con promedio por arriba de 500 antes de comenzar el choque y con tres turnos fallados. El doblete que los sacó de juego fue la respuesta a lo que considero otra táctica errónea. Hoy Cuba tendrá de rival a Italia, también en horario noctuno.
HOLANDA SIGUE INVICTA
No hay dudas, lo de Holanda va en serio. Ayer consiguió su cuarta victoria en línea tras doblegar a Puerto Rico 5 carreras por 0, la lechada a dos manos entre el abridor Tom Stuibergen —7 innings espaciando 5 jits con 85 lanzamientos— y el cerrador David Bergman sacando los últimos seis outs. Dos veteranos, Sydney de Jong y Brian Engelhard, despacharon cuadrangulares para contribuir al costoso tercer revés boricua.
Otro que anda bien es Venezuela tras su triunfo ante Dominicana, 6-3. La tropa de Luis Sojo disparó una docena de imparables y fabricó todas sus anotaciones en las primeras cuatro entradas, mientras los relevistas Jorge Guzmán y Gabriel Alfaro dejaron a los quisqueyanos sin marcar carreras en los cuatro capítulos finales y el camarero Óscar Angulo bateó de 4-2 y anotó dos veces.
Estados Unidos sumó su tercer éxito, pero todo el mundo aquí cuestiona su ofensiva, pues solo tres carreras ante Grecia son muy pocas. El cuarto bate Matt Clark remolcó dos con un jonrón. Y al fin Australia hizo la cruz ante Nicaragua, 4-3, pero ambos suman tres reveses y no deben de estar en la segunda ronda.

Cuba K.O's Venezuela 14-2 in seven innings, remains undefeated
Based on the stellar performance of Miguel Lahera, who struck out eight in six complete innings, Cuba easily defeated Venezuela 14-2, to remain unbeaten in group two of the IXXXX World Cup of Baseball. Lahera only allowed four hits and did not give up any bases on balls.
Castillo and Pestano homered for Cuba and Cepeda had a double and a triple.
Cuba will be off today, and will play Italy on Friday.

Cuba defeats Dominican Republic 3-0
Heroes of the game.
Cuba came alive in the bottom of the sixth inning, after being held hitless for five innings. The criollos connected four hits and scored three runs on the six inning, chasing the Dominicans starting pitcher, Willy Lebron, who up to that point had done an excellent job of blanking out the Cubans.
The spark was a key hit by Yuliesky Gourriel, which send Frederich Cepeda home with the winning run.
Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez performed very well for seven complete innings.
Yadier Pedroso came as a reliever in the eighth inning, and he did an excellent job.
Cuba will play against Venezuela on Wednesday night at 8:30 p.m.

El partido entre los equipos Cuba y República Dominicana, pactado aquí en el estadio Rico Cedeño, será el plato fuerte de la jornada de hoy en la XXXIX Copa Mundial de béisbol Panamá-2011.
El derecho Miguel Alfredo González tendrá la responsabilidad de abrir el desafío por las huestes cubanas, mientras el también diestro Willy Lebrón lanzará las serpentinas por los quisqueyanos.
Contra (República) Dominicana trataré de mantener su marcador de carreras en cero. Todos son bateadores peligrosos, con mucha experiencia y nivel, los conozco y sé que mis posibilidades de éxito están en la concentración, declaró González en exclusiva con Prensa Latina.
Estos dos serpentineros se enfrentaron hace un año en el premundial de Puerto Rico y en aquella ocasión la suerte favoreció a Lebrón, quien más tarde se erigiría héroe en la conquista del título en ese certamen.
Sé que este partido tiene precedentes, ciertamente no muy buenos para mí, pero en la pelota todos los juegos son diferentes, y viendo en la forma que estoy, seguro mañana le daré la victoria a Cuba, agregó el serpentinero cubano de 25 años.
Entretanto, el mentor del Cuba, Alfonso Urquiola, exaltó que “Willy Lebrón es un buen lanzador, pero el béisbol es un deporte impredecible y ahora apuesto por los míos, nosotros siempre vamos a salir a ganar”.
Cuba y República Dominicana han chocado en 25 ocasiones en Copas Mundiales, con 20 triunfos para los de la mayor de las Antillas por cinco de los de la tierra del merengue.
Los actuales subcampeones mundiales debutaron ayer en la XXXIX Copa del orbe con nocao 14-0 ante Australia, mientras los dominicanos blanquearon 7-0 a Italia en su primer encuentro del certamen.
En otros partidos de esta fecha Canadá expondrá su invicto ante Japón, Holanda hará lo propio ante el débil Grecia, Australia buscará su primer triunfo de la justa ante Italia, Taipei de China pondrá a prueba la maquinaria de Panamá, Surcorea irá a plácido trámite contra Alemania, y Nicaragua desafiará a Venezuela.

CHITRÉ, Panamá.— Solo cinco anotaciones había podido marcar Cuba frente al equipo australiano en los dos últimos partidos de Copa Mundial. Ayer la historia se escribió de otra forma: 14 carreras, cuatro jonrones y un lanzador como Freddy Asiel Álvarez en tarde de gala para conseguir el marcador más amplio frente a los representantes de la isla-continente en la historia de los seis desafíos entre ellos.

El cuarto bate del equipo Cuba de béisbol, Alfredo Despaigne, declaró hoy en exclusiva con Prensa Latina que es un honor ocupar ese turno en la alineación ofensiva y garantizó la conquista del título en la Copa Mundial Panamá-2011.
«Para todo pelotero es muy significativo estar aquí representando a Cuba, imagínate ser el cuarto bate, es algo único, una gran responsabilidad», exaltó el jardinero izquierdo, recordista absoluto de cuadrangulares en copas del orbe, con 11.
El equipo cubano debutará el próximo 2 de octubre ante Australia en la XXXIX Copa Mundial de béisbol, dispuesta a realizarse en varias ciudades panameñas.
Para Alfredo Despaigne «el objetivo principal es alcanzar el primer lugar, aquí no vinimos ni por el segundo ni por el tercero, estamos en Panamá bien enfocados para llevarnos el título y dedicárselo al pueblo cubano que tanto se lo merece».
«Tenemos la autoestima muy alta y la disposición para hacer grandes cosas», destacó el internacional cubano al término del entrenamiento, en el que los jugadores antillanos realizaron trabajo con pesas en la mañana y cumplieron con una exhaustiva preparación de bateo y fildeo en la tarde.
Despaigne dijo además que cada oportunidad ofensiva de este campeonato la afrontará con mayor madurez, aunque tendrá que mejorar su concentración en el plato y «sacar paciencia de donde no la haya».
«Estoy interiorizando el estudio de los lanzadores contrarios desde el primer pitcheo del partido, eso me ayudará en la lectura del juego, aunque la verdad soy muy agresivo en el home, hasta un poco desesperado», anunció el toletero antillano, integrante del equipo nacional al II Clásico Mundial.
Cuba comenzará mañana ante Panamá una serie de tres partidos de práctica de cara al inminente torneo. Un día después chocará frente a Venezuela y el miércoles enfrentará por segunda ocasión al conjunto canalero.
